This optional assignment is due Sunday, Sep 8, at 11:59PM Central time. There are no late days for this assignment: I need to collect the team info to finalize the lecture/presentation schedule before hw1 due! HW0 does not contribute to the final grade.
If you choose to skip this assignment, we assume you decide to team alone in this course (see How to Submit HW0 below).
In this course, students are expected to complete two main tasks:
We allow students to team up with the maximum team size of Three. Thus, you can team alone or with one or two more students. However, once you make the decision, you must follow it in the entire course for both tasks (i.e., your team must present the paper and work on the research proposal and presentations together). You are not allowed to switch teams in the middle of the course. There are pros and cons for teaming up. If you decide to team up, you are responsible for any unexpected outcomes (e.g., your teammate is sick; your teammate drops out; your teammate does not finish the work as planned and your team cannot finish an assignment). We do not accept any excuses on collaboration issues (but you can still use grace period).
Personally, we encourage PhD students to team alone or with a Master student that shares similar research interests. Ideally, students are encouraged to combine Software Engineering with your own research for the research proposal - we will talk more about the project selection in a lecture. But of course, you are welcome to brainstorm a new research idea that is exciting to you.
Email BOTH the instructor Yu Huang (yu.huang at vanderbilt.edu) and the GSI Yueke Zhang (yueke.zhang at vanderbilt.edu) with the subject CS8395-HW0. In this email, you should explicitly clarify whether (1) you want to work alone or (2) you will team up with another student. If you choose (2), you must clearly indicate who your teammates are (list all of your names and VU netIDs) and CC your teammates in the email.
For the students who want to team alone, they do not need to email the instructor (they can if they want to confirm it). If the instructor has not received the HW0 email before the deadline from a student (and this student is not listed as teammates in any other emails), we assume this student will team alone in this course. The teaming decision cannot be changed after HW0 deadline.
